Twitter Tips and Talk for Bloggers and Authors

Twitter ImageSocial media, including tools such as Twitter, can be an awesome way to support your blog, posts, and written products. Twitter is also a great way to enhance your reputation as an author or blogger, to help gain authority in a particular area, to gain new followers, and boost recognition of your name.

Many bloggers and authors use Twitter to announce posts and new books, but the capacity of this dandy tool goes far beyond that. For example:

Twitter Blog Marketing Tips

  • Announce News – Give updates and announcements, book launches, and blog post tidbits
  • Provide Customer “Service” – you may not think of your blog as something where you need to provide “customer service,” particularly if you’re not selling anything. However, if you’re following topics in Twitter that relate to your blog topic, there is no reason you can’t jump in there and answer questions for others, direct them to a good resource – thereby providing them a great, and surprisingly unexpected, service.
  • Provide Specials – Give away bits of your expertise to followers and if you do sell books or other products, use Twitter to provide special Twitter deals or discounts.
  • Guest Posting – Be a little unconventional and consider using Twitter as a new outlet for soliciting guest blog posts, or for alerting others that you have some guest blog posts available on certain topics.
  • Do a Twitter interview with someone who is an authority in an area relating to your blog.

Twitter Author Marketing Tips

Whether you’re in the process of developing free downloads, ebooks, print books, or other written products, as an author you can use Twitter to enhance your marketing by using some of these ideas:

  • Run a pre-book launch Twitter contest and reward winner
  • Announce a Tweetup (gathering of Twitterers) for launch day
  • Do a Twitter interview with someone who is an authority in an area relating to your product
  • Give away free books to your followers
  • Set up a book hashtag for announcements and information about your book
  • Build your following by live posting about your book (for instance sales)
  • Give your book away for free and Tweet about it

And for fun, so you can talk with a Twitter head with the best of them, here is some

Twitter lingo:

  • Tweet – a Twitter single update of 140 characters or less
  • Hashtag – using the # symbol at the beginning of a phrase or word or topic to begin and carry on a conversation about that topic. Any user who searches for that hashtag will find all the Tweets. (For a full description on using hashtags go here.)
  • Mention – you and others can mention a Tweet, name, etc. by preceding it with the @ symbol
  • Retweet or “RT” – taking and automatically crediting a tweet from one user and posting it yourself (or someone else doing this with your Tweets)
  • TweetUps – using Twitter to meet with other Twitter folks
  • Trending Topics (TTs) – a range of subjects which many users across Twitter are talking about simultaneously. Clicking on a Trending Topic in the list will bring up a range of tweets mentioning the matter of interest, and for each Trending Topics, there will be up to three ‘Top Tweets’ (Tweets that have been Retweeted more than 150 times).
  • Promoted Tweets – A single Trending Topic which a company or organization can pay to ‘trend’, as to gain attention and traffic from Twitter users worldwide.
